Located at the heart of Rijeka, this ambitious structure spans 220 meters in length and combines a modern multi-level bus terminal, an 800-space public garage, and commercial facilities. The design embraces both functionality and visual impact, featuring an exoskeleton in the form of a striking diagrid that resists seismic and wind loads while serving as an architectural centerpiece. The project posed significant engineering challenges, including deep foundations with over 300 piles and the integration of unique steel connections tailored for the terminal\u2019s complex geometry. With IDEA StatiCa at the core of the workflow, the structural engineering team efficiently tackled hundreds of connections, ensuring precision and compliance with demanding safety standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the Project<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Zabica Bus Terminal is a landmark infrastructure development in Rijeka, Croatia, designed to address the city\u2019s critical need for modern transportation and parking facilities. Spanning an impressive 230 meters in length and up to 35-60 meters in width, the terminal combines functionality with striking aesthetics. Each unit features an exoskeleton in the form of a visually striking diagrid system. This system not only serves as an architectural statement but also provides robust resistance against seismic and wind forces, crucial in Rijeka\u2019s challenging environmental conditions. This area, formerly dominated by port warehouses, is undergoing a transformation as part of the city\u2019s efforts to reconnect with its waterfront. Most existing warehouses are being removed, with only portions of walls at the position of Expansion Joint 3 being retained. The structural engineering team included&nbsp;<strong>Sa\u0161a Mitrovi\u0107<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Ivan Palijan<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Jelena Tatalovi\u0107<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Daniel Rapac<\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong>Luka Eskinja<\/strong>, who collaborated to address the project's technical and aesthetic challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Engineering challenges<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Rijeka Bus Terminal posed significant engineering challenges due to its scale, complexity, and the&nbsp;<strong>demanding site conditions<\/strong>. Geotechnically, the site presented substantial difficulties, with bedrock depths ranging from 10 to 40 meters. This required the installation of over 300 reinforced concrete piles to ensure adequate foundation stability. Each unit incorporates an&nbsp;<strong>exoskeleton diagrid<\/strong>&nbsp;(diagonal grid)&nbsp;<strong>system&nbsp;<\/strong>that supports both vertical and gravitational loads. This visible diagrid serves as a defining architectural feature, resisting lateral forces and transferring loads to the reinforced concrete cores. Every structural element had to be approved by the architectural team, adding complexity to the workflow.
